Intuit has discontinued Cash Register
Plus (CRP) and while I can't really say the intention
was to have "QuickBooks Point of Sale 10.0 Free Level"
(QBPOS Free) replace it, it certainly feels like that is
the path many users will take. I am already
getting lots of questions from clients about this
product and wanted to address what I can here with a
simple FAQ page for both clients and other interested
parties.

Question:
How do I get a copy?
Answer: follow
this link and fill out the form with Intuit - it looks like the site
is not up to date yet, but this got me to the free
version download -

Question:
Will I be able to manage inventory
in QBPOS Free?
Answer:
No. Despite the fact that the option to treat your
product as an inventory items appears in the item list
(along with several other types) , for accounting and tracking
purposes, all items are still treated like a
non-inventory part. For this, you will need Basic
or Pro.
Question:
Can I import my item list to QBPOS
Free?
Answer:
Unfortunately, no. Well, I should say "not really".
We can do
some tricky work to get it in there and we can do that
for you in the free hour we offer.
Question:
Can I run multiple connections of QBPOS Free (can I have
more than one workstation attached to the same database)?
Answer: No.
For this, you will need Basic or Pro. Call us for
a free demo.
Question:
Does QBPOS Free have a security module?
Answer: No.
There is no security in QBPOS Free. Not even a login,
you will need to protect it at the machine level.
If you wish to have user login, then you will need the
Basic or Pro Edition. Call us
for a free demo.
Question:
Does QBPOS Free have customer tracking functionality?
Answer: No.
There is no customer tracking in QBPOS Free. For
this you will need either the Basic or Pro
Edition. Call us for a free
demo.
Question:
Does QBPOS Free support employee time tracking
functionality?
Answer: No.
For this you will need the Pro Edition.
Call us for a free demoation.
Question:
Can I upgrade my data from CRP to
QBPOS Free?
Answer:
Unfortunately, no. You will have to abandon at
least your history though it could still be maintained
in CRP.
Question:
In CRP I could not print item tags,
can I do so in QBPOS Free?
Answer:
Yes, this functionality is available in QBPOS Free.
You can choose from the default label options easily,
but there is no functionality embedded to modify them in this version.
Question:
Will I be able to use my CRP merchant service account
with Intuit in QBPOS Free?
Answer: I have
been told that you will need to convert that account to
another type/number by the folks at Intuit Payment
Solutions. It would appear there is a different
series of numbers that somehow differentiate the
accounts.
Question:
Cash Register Plus seems to run
slow, is QBPOS 10.0 Free faster?
Answer: In
CRP, as the database became larger and larger, I
certainly saw a dramatic slowdown in processing time.
QBPOS Free is based on the QBPOS code base and
while it is slow to open, once opened it outperforms
CRP. Of course, your hardware will play a key role
in speed.
Question: How does my data get
transferred to QuickBooks Financial (QBFS) with QBPOS Free?
Answer: With CRP, you created an export
file that you would then execute and data would be imported
to QBFS. The connectivity is different for QBPOS Free.
There is no export/import function, you will need to
directly connect the two which means having QBFS (though not
the date file; that can be located elsewhere on your
network) on the same machine as QBPOS Free.
Question:
What else do I get in QBPOS Free that was not in CRP?
Answer: While
there are certainly some losses and you may just want to
go direct to Basic or Pro and save yourself some work
down the line. There is additional functionality
that might offset some of those losses. You will get:
-
Price Level functionality -
This is a way of marking down a sale based on
specific criteria
-
Sales Tax support for
multiple rate structures, plus sales tax location
tracking and mapping to QBFS
-
The ability to accept gift cards
-
Inventory Tag Printing
-
Multiple Company Files
-
Upgrade compatibility with higher
end version of QBPSO (V10)
-
Reporting dashboard
-
Sticky notes (like post it
messages directed to any and all that log in)
